Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter to Muhammad Yunus

Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, on the occasion of Bangladesh’s Independence Day. Modi conveyed his best wishes in the letter and reaffirmed India’s dedication to strengthening the bilateral relationship.

The letter highlighted the shared history and sacrifices that underpin the India-Bangladesh partnership, emphasizing the enduring influence of Bangladesh’s Liberation War. Modi expressed India’s commitment to fostering a partnership that promotes peace, stability, and prosperity, built on mutual respect for each nation’s interests.

This communication occurs amidst a period of strained relations between India and Bangladesh. The shift in government, where the Awami League, a long-standing ally of India, was replaced by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, has contributed to this tension. Reports of attacks on minorities have also raised concerns in India, prompting discussions with the interim government. Bangladesh has attributed these attacks to political motivations, denying any communal basis.

India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, has confirmed ongoing engagement with the interim government to address these concerns.   Sources and related content
